I need you to stick with me for this one. I know when you’re thinking of a photoshoot location that Downtown Norwich CT isn’t the first thing that comes to your mind. By the end of this post, I think you might be thinking of it a little differently.
Typically, people are looking for the ethereal location where they can run through fields of gold and channel their inner Michelle Kwan. If you don’t get that reference, I grew up figure skating, I’m so sorry haha! Back to the point. Your session doesn’t always have to be in a field that holds no meaning to you.
In fact, I deeply encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to choosing your location. I know it’s not every day that you see a photoshoot happening in Downtown Norwich, CT. I know not everyone loves the area, and not everyone sees the beauty. But that’s just it. The beauty is there if you look for it. It’s magnified when you drop two people, madly in love, in the center of it.
Britt and Davon traveled all the way from Massachusetts for their photoshoot. When we were planning their session, I had the vision for them to be in a more urban setting instead of the typical golden hour field. Thankfully, they trusted me with the vision and made the trek to good ol’ downtown Norwich CT.
I really wanted this session to be something out of the ordinary. There was a desperate need in me to create something that showcases the juxtaposition between what we define as beautiful and what may be perceived as not so beautiful. I wanted it to be a challenge and to see beyond what existed to create something extraordinary. I think we did just that.
When it comes to choosing a location, the actual location you get your photos done in is far less important than the people in the photos. When you look back at your photos, you’re not going to say “wow, I’m so glad that mountain was in our photo.” You aren’t going to think “I am thrilled that this grass made it on to our living room wall.” You’re going to look at the people. You’re going to see you. When you put your keys on the entry way table, you’re going to see your life. That’s the real focus of your session.
Now I know that’s a wildly unpopular opinion, but for me it’s true. I’m must less concerned with the background of the image than the story that’s unfolding right in front of me. Do we love a stunning location? OF COURSE. I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t.
But It’s not THE most important thing.
What is the most important thing? Without a doubt, the most important thing is you.
It’s your story.
Your legacy.
It’s the connection being documented.
Unique personality.
Struggles you’ve endured.
Triumphs you’ve celebrated.
Your joy.
Sorrow.
Love.
Your human experience.
Your truth.
(Honorable mention goes to light which is vital and has the potential to make or break the photo.)
The next time you have a photoshoot push yourself to see the world differently than you do now. Shift your mindset so the focus is on YOU and your story rather than what the location is. Maybe give downtown Norwich CT a shot!
When choosing a location for your session, think outside the box. I have a list of locations that I love to work at, but I also love unique spots and meaningful places. For example, this Downtown Mystic date night session was one for the books!
My locations list is exclusive to my clients. To plan your session with me click here to get started.
I wholeheartedly believe that the day of your session should be an ENTIRE date day. There’s nothing worse than showing up to a shoot frazzled and disconnected. Spend the day together connecting and soaking up all the love. After your session, grab a bite to eat in Downtown Norwich CT and keep the date going!
Throwing it back to one of my old stomping grounds. You can’t go wrong with an Irish Pub! If you go, you have to get the cottage fries. Enjoy the casual, friendly atmosphere and great food.

If you’re a self proclaimed foodie, this is the spot for you. Out of all the times I’ve been here, I’ve never once been disappointed. The dining experience is unmatched. Get the nachos. Or the Brewhouse burger with bacon jam. Or the Mac and cheese. I could keep going, but you’ll have to check it out for yourself. *Schedules date night immediately*

SO much history here! My brother and sister in law met here eons ago and it’s another spot that’s never disappointed. In 2020 it was purchased by Norwich local, Justin Burrows and he’s done wonders with the place! They make their own sauces, fresh dough, and pasta. If you’re a carb lover, head down there because fresh bread is delivered daily straight from NYC. Can I get a mangia?!

This recommendation comes straight from my parents, who let’s say have…particular taste. They LOVE Canggio and all it offers. Not your typical cuisine, this Peruvian fusion restaurant is mouthwateringly delicious. We’ve had family events catered by them, and it’s just as amazing as if you were sitting right in the restaurant. The highest praises can be sung about Julio (chef and owner), Jose (owner), and Cesar (owner).
