It’s about to go down! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! If you know me, you know I’m all about the details of a wedding day. If you don’t know me, now you know- details are important. Something that I rarely hear talked about is how to wear your engagement ring on your wedding day!
Decide which finger to wear your engagement ring on. In most cultures, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand. However, some people may choose to wear it on the right hand, or even on a chain around their neck. Choose what feels most comfortable and meaningful to you.
Consider your wedding band. If you have a wedding band that you will be wearing on the same finger as your engagement ring, decide which ring to put on first. Traditionally, the wedding band is worn first, closest to the heart, with the engagement ring on top. However, you can wear them in any order that feels comfortable to you.
Put your engagement ring on before the ceremony. On the day of the wedding, put your engagement ring on before the ceremony begins. You may want to have a bridesmaid or family member help you, especially if your dress has sleeves that are difficult to maneuver.
Consider taking off your engagement ring during the ceremony. Some people choose to take off their engagement ring during the wedding ceremony, either because it doesn’t fit well with their wedding band or because they want to focus solely on the wedding band during the exchange of rings. If you choose to take off your engagement ring, be sure to put it in a safe place.
Switch it up: If you’re not comfortable with temporarily ditching your engagement ring, put it on the other hand. You can put it on the correct hand during the rings exchange, or after the ceremony. This is totally up to you and what feels right for you. If you don’t like all eyes on you or are worried about things not going well (palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy?), wait until after the ceremony to make the switch.
Have your rings cleaned and polished: Before the wedding day, take your engagement ring and wedding band to a jeweler to have them cleaned and polished. This will ensure that they sparkle and shine in your wedding photos.
Enjoy wearing your rings: Your engagement ring and wedding band are symbols of your love and commitment to each other. Enjoy wearing them on your wedding day and every day after!
